Jharkhand’s best-kept secret is Netarhat, one of the best weekend getaways in eastern India. This small hill station is located in the Latehar district of Jharkhand, approximately 1,128 meters high, and has something for everyone: dense Sal forests, dramatic plateau lookouts, cascading waterfalls, and a lovely slow-paced atmosphere that make it truly unique! Most of Netarhat’s visitors come to find exactly what they are looking for; no effort has been made to provide it – all from Ranchi (about 150 km away)! Netarhat is rightly called the ‘Queen of Chotanagpur’ because it truly deserves to be.
Magnolia Point for sunrise
Without doubt, Magnolia Point is the most famous and spectacular viewpoint at Netarhat. The dramatic edge of the plateau on which it sits is oriented to face west, providing one of eastern India’s best sunrise experiences over a large area of forested valley below. The view from the edge of the viewpoint has unbroken horizon views over the entire Chotanagpur Plateau, looking in every direction. Arriving at least half an hour before sunrise gives visitors lots of time to settle down and watch the sky explode with an incredible range of colours. Most visitors who experience a sunrise on Magnolia Point with clear skies will reschedule their return trips home in order to remain an additional night.
Sunset Point and evening light
Netarhat’s Sunset Point offers an equally dramatic and deeply atmospheric evening counterpart to Magnolia Point. The plateau edge here faces west across the forested Betla landscape, catching the final golden light before dark. Local families and weekend visitors gather here every evening in a relaxed and entirely unpretentious community ritual. The birdsong during the thirty minutes before sunset reaches a volume and variety that experienced birdwatchers find genuinely extraordinary. Arriving an hour early secures the best unobstructed position along the viewpoint ridge.
The sal forests of Netarhat
Walking through Netarhat’s sal forests is the most quietly restorative experience the destination offers. These dense and beautifully managed forest sections cover the plateau and surrounding slopes in every direction from the town centre. The forest floor remains cool and shaded even during the warmer months, making walks genuinely comfortable across longer distances. Leopard, wild boar, and several deer species inhabit these forests alongside an exceptional diversity of resident and migratory bird species. Moving slowly and quietly through the trees after dawn consistently produces the most rewarding wildlife and birdwatching encounters.
Lodh Falls
Lodh Falls, approximately 60 kilometres from Netarhat, is Jharkhand’s highest waterfall and is worth every kilometre of the approach road. The Burha River drops approximately 143 metres over a dramatic basalt cliff face, creating a waterfall of extraordinary visual power. The surrounding forest and rocky gorge landscape amplifies the spectacle considerably beyond what the waterfall itself would create in isolation. The access road passes through genuinely beautiful forest terrain that makes the drive as rewarding as the destination. Visiting between July and October catches the falls at their most thunderously impressive and voluminous.
Koel River Valley views
The Koel River valley visible from certain Netarhat plateau edges offers a landscape of unexpected and deeply satisfying grandeur. Forested ridgelines descend in successive layers toward the river valley floor, creating a visual depth that rewards extended quiet observation. The early morning mist sitting in the valley below the plateau edge creates a particularly beautiful effect during the winter months between November and February. Several informal viewpoints along the plateau perimeter road deliver these valley panoramas without requiring any significant walking effort. These quieter spots receive far fewer visitors than Magnolia or Sunset Point throughout the year.
Planning a Netarhat weekend
Preparing your travel and accommodation prior to arrival significantly improves your Netarhat weekend experience. The nearest major city is Ranchi, which connects to Netarhat via a scenic four-hour road journey through Jharkhand’s forested interior. Completing a hotel booking online in India in the Netarhat region well ahead of the trip secures the best properties before weekend availability fades away. Good properties here fill quickly between October and February and during long weekends when Ranchi residents make the scenic drive in numbers. It is advisable to carry enough cash with you as there are limited ATMs in Netarhat.
The bottom line
Netarhat offers a rewarding blend of plateau sunrises, dense sal forests, waterfalls, and sweeping valley views. Combining peaceful atmosphere and relatively easy accessibility, it stands out as one of the most appealing nature-focused weekend getaways in eastern India. Make sure you do not plan a packed itinerary and go with the flow of the forest on your terms.
